If you followed my Instagram and Instagram Stories last week, you may have noticed a few posts from Indiana… Muncie, Indiana, to be exact, otherwise known as the home of Ball Canning!
Taking a tour of the Ball Canning factory, where 38,000 pallets of jars await shipping!
I was invited on a whirlwind “immersion trip” to learn more about the history of the company, tour the jar factory, and film a live canning demo in the Ball Test Kitchen — all to kick off the 7th Annual Can-It Forward Day and my second year as an ambassador for the beloved brand.
New half-pint jars right off the assembly line.
You may remember our fun collaboration last summer, which culminated in a series of canning demos on Can-It Forward Day. We’re doing it again this year, only it’s more like Can-It Forward Month and we’re covering four popular canning categories (salsas, jams, pickles, and condiments) in a series of Facebook Live classes on Ball’s Facebook page. It all started last weekend with canning expert Jessica (the face of Ball) and food blogger Kathryne (of Cookie and Kate) making Corn and Cherry Tomato Salsa.
Their class will replay throughout the month on Facebook, and you can look forward to more canning classes, covering every skill level from first-time canner to experienced preserver, every Wednesday at 12 noon ET:
- August 9 – Mixed Berry Jam with Heather of Whipperberry
- August 16 – Bread and Butter Pickled Beets and Sweet Pickled Radishes with me, Linda of Garden Betty
- August 23 – Sriracha Ketchup and Habanero Apricot Jelly with Marisa of Food in Jars
(No worries if you miss one, you can watch all the videos on Facebook after they air.)
From left to right: Kathryne from Cookie and Kate, Heather from Whipperberry, me, Marisa from Food in Jars, Jessica from Ball Canning, and our factory tour guide.
As you can see, we’re spreading out the canning love and keeping the vibe going all year, starting with the Summer Preserving Canning Series on Ball’s Facebook page. In the spirit of “canning it forward,” we’re also partnering with Feeding America to encourage fellow canners to continue the tradition of sharing and giving through home canning. For every package of these Sharing Jars sold, Newell Brands (the parent company of Ball) will donate four meals to the cause (up to $150,000).
Stay tuned for more canning inspiration through the summer, fall, and holidays — I’m cooking up some cool ideas with Ball for the rest of the year!
