Essential oils have numerous benefits to offer. If you're thinking about incorporating them into your life, it's important for you to be aware of the basic safety tips for using essential oils. Although using essential oils is generally a safe practice, there are a number of things you will want to be mindful of.
Basic Safety Tips for Using Essential Oils
- Make sure that the essential oil can be applied to the skin. Certain essential oils cannot be used topically. They might cause itching, redness, or pain. Even when essential oils are safe for the skin, such as lavender oil or pomegranate seed oil, it's important to avoid applying them to damaged skin or open wounds. If you have naturally sensitive skin, be sure to do a skin patch test beforehand.
- Always find out if essential oils are safe for consumption before you cook with them. Although the majority of essential oils are safe to consume, some are not. Try using Young Living's line of Vitality Oils. They are all approved for internal ingestion!
- When cooking with essential oils, make sure you buy Food Grade essential oils. These essential oils are approved for consumption by the FDA. Additionally, avoid using too much and make sure that you dilute the essential oil before cooking.
- Know that essential oils are highly flammable. Therefore, it's important to keep them away from candles, matches, gas cookers, fires, and any other open flames at all times!
- Always avoid eye contact. There is a lot of false information out there about essential oils and eye problems. Placing essential oils can cause cornea scarring and many other problems. Don't risk it. If this ever does happen by accident, do not rinse the oils out with water that will only make it worse. Wash out the essential oil with a carrier oil like coconut oil.
- Avoid applying essential oils to your skin prior to going to a tanning salon or spending time in the sun. Some essential oils can cause awful burns or skin discoloration when used before exposure to UV rays. Some of these essential oils include cumin, bergamot, bitter orange, lemon, lime, rue, grapefruit, and Angelica Root. When in doubt, avoid UV ray exposure.
- Talk to your doctor before using essential oils during pregnancy. The use of essential oils in pregnant women is controversial. Unfortunately, there's not much research out there. However, it is known that pregnant women should avoid camphor, wormwood, oak moss, parsley seed, sage, hyssop, rue, and Lavandula stoechas.
- Always keep essential oils away from children and pets. If you suspect that your child or pet has consumed essential oils, contact your nearest poison control center immediately.
Before using any essential oil, it's so important to do your research ahead of time! You will want to learn all you can about the essential oil and what ways it can be used. In particular, you will want to find out of the essential oil is safe for consumption, if it can be applied to the skin, or if it can be exposed to UV rays. By doing a little research beforehand, you can make sure that you're safely using essential oils!
