Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson On Making The Medicaid ‘Private Option’ Work

When Gov. Asa Hutchinson became governor of Arkansas in 2015, he inherited a “private option” Medicaid expansion crafted and promoted by his Democratic predecessor, Mike Beebe. In a newsmaker breakfast with reporters on February 19, convened by the Alliance for Health Reform and Health Affairs, Hutchinson detailed his proposed changes to the current program, which he calls “Arkansas Works” and how he plans to work with his state lawmakers to implement the changes.

Gov. Hutchinson also discussed his recent meeting with Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell, and what might lie ahead for his state and others in the next administration.
