Why Is Laundry So Hard? A New School Solution!

Mountains of laundry

This post is inspired and sponsored by Tide PODS plus Downy available at Walmart.

I have three boys and a husband…and a dog.

Why is laundry so hard

All of this adds up to multiple loads of laundry throughout the week, but I have something to confess…it isn't just the laundry that overwhelms me, it is the choices at the store as well.

Have you been to a laundry aisle lately?

So many choices!

And until recently I had no idea how a few simple products could change my laundry life! Here are some tips that have simplified the piles of laundry at my house after being taught the new school way of doing laundry.

Should I use liquid or powdered laundry detergent?

Neither! My suggestion is to pick up some Tide PODS plus Downy detergent pacs next time you are at Walmart. They are great for dirt, grime and odor (remember I have three boys?). This is a multi-tasking pac that will also take the mess out of laundry detergent or the need for multiple bottles/boxes and measuring cups stored in the laundry room.

How much detergent should I use in the washing machine?

Tide PODS plus Downy detergent pacs are pre-measured for exactly the right amount. If you have a particularly dirty load, you can add an extra pac.

Should the laundry detergent go in before or after the clothes?

You should always add the Tide PODS plus Downy detergent pacs to the drum of the washer before adding the clothes. This will help distribute the detergent evenly throughout the cycle. For an added compliment to the detergent, throw in Downy Unstopables beads. They give fabrics a boost of scent for up to 12 weeks. Beads should also be placed in the drum of the washing machine with your detergent pac prior to adding clothes.

What temperature should I use?

I like to use the cold cycles in case I have any clothes that are prone to shrinkage. One thing that is great is that the Tide PODS plus Downy detergent pacs will dissolve in any temperature water.

If you have something that does shrink, then soak them in water with a few tablespoons of hair conditioner for a few minutes and gently stretch the fibers back out.

What is that smell?

One thing I just learned is that washing machines should be cleaned every 6 months or so. It is super simple! You just fill the machine with hot water and add 3 cups of white vinegar and a half cup of baking soda. Let it sit for 30 minutes then run your regular wash cycle. To clean the inside of the drum and seals, spray with white vinegar and wipe.

What do dryer sheets do?

I mean, they smell nice, but is it more than that? Yes! Dryer sheets control static, prevent wrinkles, soften and freshen clothes. It is easy to toss in a sheet and I will even add an extra sheet to a really large load.

Do I really have to wash things separately?

Yes and no.

Yes, it is best to separate any colors that might bleed. It is also best to separate gym clothes with lycra/spandex because washing them with other clothes can cause breakdowns in the fabric and destroy antimicrobial and moisture-wicking qualities.

No when it comes to towels. I always washed those separately, but found that they can be washed with any other cotton clothes.

How can I keep clothes safe in the washer?

The best thing to do is to always zip zippers and secure velcro before tossing in the machine. I also have two sizes of lingerie bags available for things that can get wound up or caught on other garments.

Should I follow the garment's washing instructions?

Yes. Just yes!

Do I have to iron?

Most of the time, the answer is NO. Hang wrinkled items in the bathroom while you shower for stress-free steaming. Or you can toss the garment back into the dryer with Downy fabric softener sheet and a wet (clean) sock to remove wrinkles and static while giving your clothes a great scent.

Any tricks to getting the clothes INTO the drawers?

Yes, "file" your clothes in drawers instead of stacking them. When clothes are sitting upright, they are easier to find and put away. This tip has saved me from refolding things churned out of the drawer in a frantic search for that ONE PIECE OF CLOTHING!
