Five Things Friday

The five little things that made my week…

Shiso babies

1. Shiso babies sprouting up after the last few storms. This mint-like Asian herb (also called perilla or tía tô) volunteers like a weed in my garden, but I keep it around for its beauty and fragrance. (Not to mention it's a fantastic herb.)

Bolting brassica

2. I have brassicas bolting all over the garden right now, telling me it's time to take out the winter crops and get my beds ready for spring. (By the way, did you know you can eat these delicious flowers?)

Golden snow peas

3. A winter crop that is still hanging on: golden snow peas, which are edible from leaf to pod. I snack on them when I'm working in the garden, and love them raw in a salad.

Purple-tinged carrot leaves

4. I forgot to label them, of course, but I think these purple-tinged leaves are from the black Pusa Asita heirloom carrots I seeded a couple months ago… can't wait to pull them up and check them out!

Overwintered pepper plant

5. Thought this pepper plant had died over winter, as we had some fairly frigid temperatures, but here it is, sprouting new leaves!
