Tips for Keeping New Year’s Resolutions

With a new year comes a fresh start — we've all heard it. But if you're like me, your track record for  keeping New Year's resolutions isn't great.

As a busy mom, I tend to put myself last when it comes to priorities. Things like going to the gym and eating healthy fall away when you've got to get your kid to soccer practice, preschool, and more.

Keep New Year's Resolutions

We are working with  goodnessknows ® Snack Squares to bring you some tips for keeping New Year's resolutions, thanks to a consumer survey they conducted with Google.

Tips for Keeping New Year's Resolutions

  • Start small.  Make goals that are achievable and work your way up to larger goals. I want to lose weight, but saying that I want to lose 50 pounds is kind of overwhelming. I'm setting a goal to lose 5 pounds a month, which seems much easier to accomplish.
  • Progress, not perfection.  When you slip up — and you will — don't give up. Changing is not about being perfect, it's about being better. "Progress, not perfection" is my mantra. You can keep going knowing that you are better today than you were yesterday.
  • Find accountability. Going to the gym is hard for me. But I've found a gym with child care that my son adores. He begs to go see his friends, so I feel obligated to go. Might as well work out while I'm there.

  • Figure out what works.  For me to lose weight, I've found that it's important for me to eat smaller meals with snacks in between to keep my metabolism up. I keep goodnessknows bars in my purse for times when I'm on the go and need a snack filled with good ingredients.

  • Get the tools you need.  I keep a bottle of water with me to help stay hydrated, and use my Apple Watch to track my activity and workouts.  These tools are constant reminders of my resolutions — every time I move the bottle of water, I know I should take a drink. My watch alerts me when it's time to do activity. It's awesome!
  • Know what you're getting into.  I love this infographic from goodnessknows and Google because it paints a pretty clear picture of how to achieve your goals. It's easy to get through the first week — aim for that, then concentrate on the first month. Just keep  at it!
